C&A Technology Center,
the center for research and development and incorporation
of new technologies , has developed a new IGBT based SPRS
which incorporates smarter, contemporary technology to provide
superior features and is a better system over the previous
model of indigenously developed SPRS In Slip Ring Induction
Motors (SRIM), s1ip power is available in rotor circuit which
is dissipated as heat in the external resistors. This slip
power can be largely retrieved and fed back to the supply
grid through smart application of technology using Slip Power
Recovery System (SPRS).

The new IGBT SPRS uses the latest inverter and Active Front
End technology. The superior features offered by this new
SPRS are:
1. Designed for tropical conditions
-Designed for 50ºC ambient temperature.
-Process controller' for referencing, interlocking and protection
- thus avoiding several electrical moving contacts which
are prone to malfunctioning in dusty environments.
2. Conceived for process stability
-Speed holding accuracy of 0.5%.
-Bumpless transfer from SPRS to rotor resistance control
in case of fault.
-Changeover to voltage feedback in case of tacho-generator
failure.
3. Environment - friendly configuration
-Better Power Factor at utility. The source converter in
the IGBT SPRS system operates over all load ranges at unity
(1.0) pf, so it does not need any pf correction capacitors.
-Lower Harmonics at utility.PWM converters are switched
at around 1.5khz or more. The harmonic current for such
inverters are centered around switching frequency and can
be easily filtered out. 4. Safety to induction motor
-Software-based rotor current asymmetry detection.
-Fail-safe changeover from rotor resistance control to SPRS
to avoid a rotor open circuit.
-Motor Torque pulsations are eliminated. The current in
the rotor circuit has very low harmonic currents as PWM
drive is used.
5. Safety to mechanical system
-Closed-loop speed control to reduce vibrations.
6. Supply voltage fluctuations
-Control system designed to withstand upto 40% voltage dip.
7. Over voltage Protection circuit
-Fast over voltage detection circuit to take corrective
action.
-DC resistance plus bypass system* to protect SPRS in case
of severe over voltage.
