L&T has won a prestigious international award instituted by the International Federation for Structural Concrete (better known by its original French name of Federation Internationale du Beton or FIB).

The structure, which has been chosen for a Special Mention by the Jury as an Outstanding Concrete Structure, is the Engineering Design & Research Centre (EDRC) building of L&T's ECC Construction Division in Chennai. The Award, which consists of a certificate and a plaque which is to be displayed on the award-winning structure, was received by Mr. A. Ramakrisha, L&T's Deputy Managing Director, at the FIB Congress held in Osaka, Japan, on October 16, 2002. The Osaka Awards are given to structures completed between 1998 and 2001, for which 41 entries were received from 12 national member groups of FIB.

L&T is the only Indian company to receive this global honour from the topmost organization of professionals, which has been established for promoting and recognising excellence in structural concrete construction. The Awards, which are like the Oscar of structural concrete, are given once in four years, by an eminent Jury through successive rounds of secret voting after watching detailed presentations received from all over the world and consist of nominations, special mentions and awards.

The citation accompanying the award said, "The Jury liked the impressive architecture …made of a series of levels with different orientations in a floral pattern spreading out from the central column…This structure is an exemplary application of pre-stressed concrete with sophisticated shapes produced from a repetitive use of formwork."
In the 1994 Washington Congress of FIB, L&T received the Outstanding Concrete Structure Award for the Administrative Office Building of ECC in Chennai, apart from a Special Mention for Sathya Sai Auditorium in Hyderabad. In the 1998 Amsterdam Congress, the L&T-built Kanteerava Indoor Stadium was selected for a Special Mention.

L&T's ECC Construction Division has so far won several international accolades and recognitions for its construction capabilities. The most important among them include awards received from Royal Society for Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) U.K.; American Society for Concrete Contractors (ASCC), New York; American Concrete Institute (India) Chapter, Bombay; Indian Institution of Bridge Engineers (IIBE), Mumbai; and Mc Bauchemi award from the Indian Concrete Institute, Chennai.

Commenting on the FIB Award, Mr. Ramakrishna said ,"This Award re-confirms L&T's status as the only Indian construction organisation which is comparable with best in the world."
